The association was founded in 1992 to showcase quilts and reward their makers in the Pacific Northwest and western Canada. The organization has nearly 800 members from Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and the Yukon Territory.

The SouthWestern Association for Indian Arts, Inc. (SWAIA) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1922 to support and preserve American Indian cultures. This commitment has transitioned with the needs of Indian people and continues today in the form of educational programs and art-oriented events that encourage cultural preservation, intercultural understanding and economic opportunities for American Indians through excellence in the arts.
