The 1999 Craft Organization Directors' Association (CODA) Conference will be held at Tamarack in Beckley, W.V., from March 25-27. The theme for this year's conference will be "Cultural Tourism," focusing on how states and regions around the country are using the arts to promote travel to and through their states. A leader in this movement, Tamarack was built in 1995 to promote West Virginia's craft heritage. In its first year, the center attracted 550,000 visitors and $5 million in revenue.
The CODA Survey, which will study the impact of crafts on the national economy, will also be discussed at this conference. The survey, slated to be launched this March, has been postponed until next March to allow more time for fund raising.
Kirsten Coughlin is editorial assistant of The Crafts Report.
